The hikidashi-guro technique — drawing a piece from the kiln at full heat and cooling the black glaze in an instant — has been used since the Momoyama period to fix a glassy, iron-black surface that slow cooling cannot produce.

A wide, low tea bowl by Kai Tsujimura, pulled from the kiln at full heat in the hikidashi-guro manner. The oval rim, called kutsuwa after the shape of a horse's bit, opens the bowl sideways and gives it an unusually broad, settled presence on the mat.

The black glaze was chilled in an instant, so the surface is neither glossy nor matte but somewhere between: dull iron-black over most of the body, breaking to rust and amber where the glaze thins along the throwing rings.

The foot is left bare. Coarse, gritty clay shows on the underside, and a tightly cut spiral kodai sits inside a rough, sandy base that contrasts with the dark, smooth interior.

A bowl for thick and thin tea alike, and one whose low profile suits a summer setting.

Kai Tsujimura was born in Nara in 1976. He trained under his father, the ceramicist Shiro Tsujimura, from 1994, before building his own wood-fired kiln in Sakurai, Nara, in 2000. His work centres on wood-fired tea ceramics, shown both in Japan and abroad.
