Sadamitsu Sugimoto

Sadamitsu Sugimoto is a Japanese ceramic artist celebrated for tea ceramics rooted in Shigaraki and Iga, where Momoyama-era spirit meets Zen-inflected wabi-sabi. Born in Tokyo in 1935, he built an anagama kiln in the mountains of Shigaraki in 1968 and deepened his tea-ware practice. From 1974, he received guidance from Zen master Tachibana Daikame of Daitokuji, shaping a lifelong pursuit of quiet intensity and “unchanging” beauty. Drawing from classical wares while refining kiln-born “scenery,” he creates tea bowls, water jars, flower vessels, and sake wares that hold stillness, tension, and lingering resonance.
