Toru Ichikawa

Toru Ichikawa is a Japanese ceramic artist who reimagines Bizen’s clay-and-flame tradition through a boldly contemporary lens—intense reds, metallic blacks, and shimmering gold-and-silver accents that radiate like light from within the surface. Born in Tokyo in 1973, he trained under renowned Bizen master Ryuichi Kakurezaki from 2011, and established his own kiln in Tamano, Okayama in 2015. Working across sake cups, tea bowls, and vessels, Ichikawa embraces the kiln’s chance-born “scenery” while carving a language of freedom and inner visions. His pieces don’t merely sit in a room—they change its pulse.
