Hokuto Ito

Hokuto Ito (b. 1961, Nakano, Tokyo) is a Japanese ceramic artist known for refined, vividly lyrical works that bridge classical craft and contemporary sensibility. After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts and completing its graduate program, he apprenticed under Living National Treasure Yoshimichi Fujimoto. In 1993, he established his kiln in Hino, Tokyo, and has continued to exhibit as a member of the Japan Kōgei Association. Ito developed his own signature approach often described as “yūkoku iro-e with gold and silver”: incisive carved lines beneath the glaze, combined with clear, resonant color and delicate metallic accents. Motifs—fish, flowers, insects, and other traces of nature—are composed with quiet precision across sake cups, tea bowls, and vases. Each piece shifts with the light, turning everyday gestures into a small, attentive ritual.
