Masatake Fukumori

Masatake Fukumori is a leading Iga-yaki ceramic artist and the seventh-generation head of Doraku-gama in Iga, Mie. Born in 1944, he took on the family kiln at a young age and has shaped a body of work that spans donabe cooking pots, everyday vessels, and tea utensils. His ceramics celebrate the raw eloquence of Iga clay—unglazed, flame-kissed surfaces, natural ash effects, and subtle shifts of color that record the kiln’s heat and time. Rooted in function yet deeply expressive, Fukumori’s pieces bring a quiet richness to cooking and tea rituals, embodying the Japanese ideal of beauty made for use.
