Yui Tsujimura

Yui Tsujimura is a Japanese ceramic artist based in the mountains of Nara, devoted to the kiln-born “scenery” of natural ash glaze. Born in 1975, he grew up surrounded by pottery, apprenticed under his father, renowned potter Shiro Tsujimura, in 1993, and established his own kiln in Mizuma, Nara in 2000. Firing primarily in an anagama (tunnel kiln), he does not apply glaze by hand; instead, wood ash falls onto the surface and vitrifies at high temperature, creating singular pools of deep blue, vivid green, and flame-marked nuance. Inspired by the primal beauty of ancient wares such as Sueki and early mountain tea bowls, his works—tea bowls, sake cups, and vessels—carry a quiet intensity that can never be repeated.
