The oval rim, called \u003ci\u003ekutsuwa\u003c\/i\u003e after the shape of a horse's bit, opens the bowl sideways and gives it an unusually broad, settled presence on the mat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe black glaze was chilled in an instant, so the surface is neither glossy nor matte but somewhere between: dull iron-black over most of the body, breaking to rust and amber where the glaze thins along the throwing rings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe foot is left bare. Coarse, gritty clay shows on the underside, and a tightly cut spiral \u003ci\u003ekodai\u003c\/i\u003e sits inside a rough, sandy base that contrasts with the dark, smooth interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA bowl for thick and thin tea alike, and one whose low profile suits a summer setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKai Tsujimura was born in Nara in 1976. He trained under his father, the ceramicist Shiro Tsujimura, from 1994, before building his own wood-fired kiln in Sakurai, Nara, in 2000.
